How can parents prevent crooked teeth during childhood?

So, as a parent we look after our children and we ensure that simply nothing obstructs the growth of our child. We always want to give them the best in life. When it comes to their oral health, it is fine to think a bit in advance. From the moment your child gets the baby teeth, it is your responsibility to look after the teeth, ensure the clean the mouth daily, and check the progress on the oral health as your child grows into a grown up, teenagers and even adult. A lot of braces who come to us to get braces in Dallas for their children, ask us whether they could have prevented these crooked teeth in the mouth of their children. Although the parents cannot completely dictate if the child gets crooked teeth or not, they can make efforts to keep them aligned as long as they can. The simplest example would be getting rid of habits like thumb-sucking, pacifiers and so on. Most of the children have the habit of thumb sucking and it is quite normal until the age of 3 or 4 years. The moment the child crosses the age of 4, you should ensure that you get rid of such habits as early as you can.

So, let’s see if as parents we can actually prevent crooked teeth in our child’s mouth and at least prevent the same from becoming a permanent issue for your child. You can make all the efforts to ensure that your child doesn’t need to spend a fortune in various straightening procedures. The following are some techniques that will help in preventing crooked teeth during the childhood years.

1. Ensure a good oral hygiene

One thing that you can do to prevent some unwanted misalignments in the mouth of your chilld is to maintain good hygiene. You must never encourage your child to miss out on the brushing regimen. Brushing and flossing should be imbibed in them as a part of your customs, traditions and culture.

2. Avoid excessive thumb-sucking

We already stated this above that you should always prevent the habit of thumb-sucking in your child. Excessive thumb-sucking is too bad for your child’s teeth. Thumb-sucking is responsible for causing the front teeth to protrude, not only disrupting the look of your child’s face, but also creating misalignments in the normal bite of your child. This habit is never appreciated in orthodontics
